Okhrey
A base to Explore Barsey Sanctuary
Okhrey, a small hamlet in Sikkim's remote western corner, came to fame due to the proximity to Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary. This is the last important village before Hilley, the gateway to the sanctuary. At an altitude of close to 2500 metres, the little village has now few homestays to accommodate mostly the hikers willing to reach the Sanctuary Top to get a stunning mountain view and experience the riot of rhododendron during spring.
The scenic surrounding of Okhrey is lucrative and offers a desired relaxation before and end of the hiking. A small hike for about 45 min takes you to another interesting village called Ribdi, where you can experience local wine made from rhododendron flowers and witness cheese making.
