Thimpu
Modernisation with Traditional Values
Situated in the western central part of Bhutan, Thimphu (earlier spelt Thimpu) is the largest as well as the capital city of the country. Spread in a north-south direction on the west bank of the Wang Chhu, Thimphu was declared the capital city in the year 1961.
Over the years, Thimphu has changed itself from a small village in the Thimphu valley to a thriving cosmopolis, where the mythical and the modern cohabit seamlessly.
Thimphu is one of the very few cities in the country equipped with ATM facilities. Also, this is the only capital city in the world with no traffic lights! After the initial installation, the residents found them to be lacking a human touch. Hence white-gloved traffic policies still control the ever-increasing traffic with hand gestures – snaps of the whole activity are one of the most popular takeaways for visitors to Bhutan.
